The 2022 JoVE Science Education and Research Innovation Awards have paved the way to highlight innovative uses of video resources to advance research and teaching in science disciplines. We hope these blog posts will help you find inspiration on utilizing visual resources in the best ways.
Below you can read the winning entry by the 2022 JoVE Librarian Innovation Award winner, Serenay Baykara, Electronic Resources and Education Librarian, Bezmialem Vakif University, Turkey.
Bezmialem Vakıf University is one of the first thematic universities established with the theme of health as a continuation of Gureba-yi Muslimin Hospital, established in 1845. It offers education and training activities only in health. In addition to educational activities, there are research and development centers within the university. Our libraries support educational, scientific, and research activities. The user profile of our library consists of students, academicians, physicians, health professionals, and researchers.
The research services department in the library contributes to the research processes of academics, physicians, health workers, and students for the visibility of their research by producing innovative ideas and supporting their scientific work. I am interested in electronic resource management and user training in our unit to help effectively use our electronic resources and create awareness of our resources. Our library strives to make thousands of printed and electronic resources visible and accessible to users.
I contact our research users to learn about their expectations from the library and ensure the participation of the library director in the meetings where research and development activities are discussed during all administrative and academic meetings held in the academic year. The primary purpose of these meetings is to improve national and international research and development activities, to support academics and train qualified personnel, and to further train researchers using the best training method. Participation in these meetings strengthens our relations with scholars and the ties between the university administration and the library. Many issues related to library services come to the fore at these meetings.
As a result of our meetings with our library director, we carried out many activities related to the JoVE database. We subscribed to JoVE in 2017 & in 2022, we got an unlimited subscription. We organized JoVE training for our academicians and announced it to our users. We have shared reports on our intranet, e-mail, WhatsApp, social media accounts, Youtube channel, website, and libguides. We also provide JoVE printed promotional materials at our library that are exhibited and handed to students at the information desk and hung on the library, university and hospital buildings.
We aim to establish strong collaborations with our researchers by providing research services through the library. The critical issue with collaboration is the inclusion of the library in research and learning processes for students and research, development, and teaching processes designed for academics. One of our most prominent works is the JoVE-Bezmialem Vakif University (BVU) Integration Project. By integrating JoVE videos into the BVU e-learning system's database, we could support our university's distance learning and online applications. Video playlists were created according to the curricula of all our faculties. These videos were uploaded to the BVU e-learning system and our academics were also given access to upload the videos. We introduced this project to the board of directors of our university and received positive feedback. In 2022, 282 JoVE videos were created in line with a request to upload them to the Microsoft Teams platform and share them with academicians.
In 2022, four JoVE training sessions were held for the faculty, and about 30 training sessions have been completed since 2017. JoVE curriculum specialist Melita Parlak introduced the JoVE platform to our academics in different groups and trained them to help create awareness of JoVE resources and how to use them. We also plan to bring JoVE representatives to train Pharmacy and Dentistry academicians and Nursing Department students.
As a result of our long-standing efforts, the research method of our scholars at Beykoz Life Sciences and Biotechnology Institute was published in JoVE. The library supported the researchers through the publication process & announced the publication within the university via e-mail, library web page, and social media to encourage other academics.
The success of our work reflects in the positive feedback from our academics, who use JoVE videos in both lectures, scientific publication preparation, and patient care processes;
"The library develops and offers innovative services for the needs of academics and students by supporting our research. The library carries out many promotional activities related to the database. I learned about JoVE videos through library training and e-mail announcements of the library. Thanks to the library, I am familiar with the medicine videos in the research section - Prof. Taha Takmaz, Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Bezmialem Vakif University.”
