We’re in awe of all the STEM educators, researchers and librarians who entered the awards this year and we salute their hard work, dedication and talent. Our winners, in, the second year of the awards, have shown how they have used STEM video in innovative ways and, in doing so, have accelerated science education and research in their institutions and communities.
Our esteemed panel of librarians, educators and researchers had the difficult task of choosing nine winners from 166 high-quality entries this year. Thank you to everyone who entered and congratulations to our worthy winners.
2022 Educator Innovation Award
Dhanellie Roncal
“The award will serve as a shining example for my fellow educators to strive for excellence and always pursue innovations that make a difference. More importantly, the award would be a monumental inspiration for our learners, encouraging them to persevere and never falter in their dedication to learning.”
Dhanellie Roncal, Teacher II at Mateo National High School in the Philippines. Dhanellie revealed how the teachers’ love of cycling bridged the gap in delivering quality education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Joanne Pennock
“I am delighted to receive the award and have the work I am passionate about recognized in this way. This incredibly generous award will give us a platform to publicize the project for wider dissemination and to further develop the resources.”
Dr. Joanne Pennock, Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester in the UK. The hugely successful Daily Definition Challenge and a suite of animated videos were inspired by the engagement needs of a new and more diverse cohort of learners.

Dr. Stephanie Schweiker
“The team has worked together over the past 10 years to develop a blended chemistry curriculum for teaching a diverse student cohort. This award will enable us to promote our work at an international conference and encourage other educators to use our freely available resources.”
Dr. Stephanie Schweiker, Associate Professor at Bond University in Australia. Chemistry with Dr. Steph, a series of practical videos and gamified experiments, has been a hit with students and has attracted interest from the global chemistry education community.
2022 Researcher Innovation Award
Dr. Ajay Rajaram
“I am honored to receive JoVE’s Research Innovation Award. This opportunity will allow us to share our research at an international scientific conference and further support our group in publishing a JoVE manuscript.”
Dr. Ajay Rajaram, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the US. Ajay explained how video has been used to help others understand new research in predicting brain injury in newborn infants.
Armando Gonzalez Sanchez
“This award is dedicated to everyone who has been a part of the Tratamiento de Emisiones Gaseosas research group in the last 10 years at UNAM. I will encourage colleagues, students and everyone in the field to use JoVE for future research and learning purposes.”
Dr. Armando Gonzalez Sanchez, Associate Researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In his essay, Armando explained how JoVE videos had helped in his research into biogas purification and usage and the subsequent - and safe - presentation of his findings.
Dr. Victoria Alonso
“I believe researchers worldwide are now adapting and applying innovative tools, like videos, to boost their research lines, build collaborations and enhance lab training. This award highlights these approaches and motivates me and hopefully other scientists to apply these methods in their everyday tasks.”
Dr. Victoria Alonso, Researcher and Assistant Professor at the National University of Rosario in Argentina. Victoria’s use of JoVE videos has quickly increased the number of researchers studying the parasite responsible for Chagas disease.
2022 Librarian Innovation Award
Serenay Baykara
“I think that the award encourages the future work of librarians. Thanks to the award, I had the chance to announce our work to more people.”
Serenay Baykara, Electronic Resources & Education Librarian at Bezmialem Vakif University in Turkey. Serenay told us how the academic and librarian partnership has resulted in a massive increase in the use of JoVE resources and the creation of valuable new video content to add to the JoVE library.

Dragana Koljenik, Web and Social Media Editor in Chief at the National and University Library in Croatia. The Digilab NSK Podcasts Project has enhanced the student learning experience and also created a thriving podcaster community.
Jonathan Munyoro
“This award is a powerful motivator for me to keep improving my abilities in creating more interactive and innovative video materials to support science education and research as part of the University of Zimbabwe Library team.”
Jonathan Munyoro, Subject Information Specialist at the University of Zimbabwe library. Jonathan explained how teamwork and collaboration came together to produce information and digital skills training videos during the COVID-19 pandemic.
