What is Homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the process by which biological systems maintain a stable internal environment despite changes in external conditions. Examples of Homeostasis

When the body becomes too hot, mechanisms such as sweating and vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) help dissipate heat. Conversely, when the body is too cold, shivering and vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) work to conserve heat.

  2. Blood Glucose Regulation: The body regulates blood sugar levels through the actions of insulin and glucagon, hormones produced by the pancreas. After eating, insulin is released to lower blood glucose levels by promoting the uptake of glucose into cells. Between meals, glucagon triggers the release of stored glucose from the liver to maintain energy levels.

  3. pH Balance: The human body must keep its blood pH within the narrow range of 7.35 to 7.45. The kidneys and respiratory system play critical roles in this process. The kidneys excrete excess acids or bases, while the respiratory system adjusts the rate of carbon dioxide exhalation, which influences blood pH.

For example, high-altitude climbers experience lower oxygen levels, which can disturb the balance of gases in their blood.
