It is the probability of observing a test statistic as extreme as, or more extreme than, what is observed if the null hypothesis is true. If this P-value is less than the chosen significance level (often 0.05), then the null hypothesis is rejected in favor of the alternative. If it is greater, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
